Whether you have well water or city water, most likely you use a lot of tap water. From washing dishes to bathing, laundering, and food preparation, the purity of water is important from a health standpoint – especially if you’re using it as drinking water.
Because there are such lax standards for the drinking water that fills store shelves – not to mention the annual waste of more than 1.5 million tons of plastic water bottles – often you’re better off to treat your own tap water. But there are so many options. Carbon filters – found in pitchers and on faucets – simply don’t remove many toxins. Reverse osmosis is an excellent but pricey option that creates four to eight gallons of wastewater for every gallon of clean drinking water.
What does an ultraviolet filtration process do?
One other way to treat water is through ultraviolet filters. The Zuvo Water Filtration System is one choice. In Zuvo’s filtration process, tap water is mixed with ozone so that the water is oxidized. (To clarify, the ozone converts to oxygen by the carbon filter before the water is discharged.) The high-intensity ultraviolet light floods the water in a photo-oxidation process. This simply means the ultraviolet light and ozone work together as oxidizers to treat the water. The tap water passes through a Class 1 Particulate Reduction Filter before being treated to ultraviolet light one final time.
Zuvo’s filtration process reduces tiny particulates, non-pathogenic organisms, lead, cysts like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, and the taste and odor of chlorine. However, it does not reduce arsenic, nitrates, or fluoride.
Zuvo is not recommended or intended to disinfect contaminated water, but it treats disinfected public drinking water.
The nuts and bolts
There are a few things to keep in mind with the Zuvo Water Filtration System: you do need to replace filters. Standard-capacity and VOC filters need changed every three months; high-capacity filters need changed every five months. And after using the Zuvo system for seven to ten years, you’ll need to replace the ultraviolet light.
Zuvo Water Filtration Systems come in under the sink and above the sink models. Both need electricity to run, and the under the sink model requires a Zuvo faucet.
It’s also encouraging to note that the system’s tubing is free of both BPAand phthalates. There’s no lead in the system, either.
