When I worked as a newspaper editor, much of the editorial staff remained humble because we knew that no matter how hard as we worked on each daily edition, our newspaper would end up lining someone’s birdcage.
There’s nothing like poring over story, design and editing details for hours and knowing that, ultimately, all your hard work will end up in the trash.
You may choose to line your birdcage with newspaper – if you have one. If you’re bird-free, though, and still subscribe to a newspaper, how can you reuse yesterday’s news? Here are 10 alternatives to the recycling bin:
1. Packing material
If you need to protect objects in packages – either when mailing or moving – add crumpled or shredded newspaper. I’ve loved when people send me packages with crumpled newspapers, because I can read what’s happening in other places in the world.
2. Pet care
While shredded newspaper makes excellent lining for birdcages and hamster cages, also use sheets of newspaper when potty training your puppy.
3. Absorbing spills
The next time you spill some liquid in the kitchen, use a newspaper to mop it up instead of a paper towel.
4. Absorbing odors
A quick way to absorb odors in a lunch box or Thermos is to stuff the container with crumpled newspapers.
5. Shoe stuffers
To keep the shape in your out-of-season boots or shoes, stuff them with newspapers.
6. Party piñata
Planning a party? Make a piñata by dipping strips of newspaper in a mixture of flour and water. Shape around a balloon, let dry, and paint. (From personal experience I know you should try to avoid a lot of layers … or the piñata is nearly impossible to break.)
7. Tablecloth
For sloppy summer suppers at the picnic table, use newspaper as a tablecloth.
8. Paint drop cloth
When you or your children are working on a painting project, use newspaper as a drop cloth and protect surfaces from splattered paint.
9. Gardening
In your garden, arrange four layers of newspaper around plants on a weeded soil. Water with a hose. The wet newspaper will dry and keep weeds away. You also can shred newspaper and add it to your compost pile.
