Why not turn the first snowfall of the year into a special family celebration?!
I started making First Day of Snow Fudge when my son was a year old, and it’s turned to an anticipated (and fun!) family tradition. This recipe is easy enough for toddlers to help with, especially if you don’t mind when they sneak chocolate chips.
This definitely is not health food, but we only eat it once a year … I like to cut the fudge into tiny squares, so it lasts about a week.
This recipe only calls for three ingredients – chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and sweetened condensed milk. If you’re limiting your consumption of BPA, you’ll want to avoid the can of sweetened condensed milk. To prevent this, try Paula Deen’s recipe for homemade sweetened condensed milk.
First Day of Snow Fudge
Ingredients
- 3 cups chocolate chips (Semi-sweet works best, but you can also add a blend of dark chocolate and milk chocolate. If you want to be really green AND healthy, opt for free-trade dark chocolate chips.)
- 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Directions
Over low heat, melt chocolate chips with sweetened condensed milk in a heavy saucepan.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
Spread evenly into a buttered 8- or 9- inch baking dish.
Chill until firm. (This should take 1 to 2 hours.) Cut into squares and enjoy!

Sounds yummy and a perfect once a year tradition! :)
YUM!! I’ve never tried this recipe, so I’m curious to see if it’ll work as a “safe” version for me and my boys. It’d be very easy to “veganize” this or make it allergy-friendly, just FYI. I make dairy- and soy-free sweetened condensed milk all the time (using that same recipe) with dry rice milk powder and dairy-free margarine (so substitutes are fine!–Paula Deen is rather weird about her butter LOL). And there are dairy-free chocolate chips out there too!
Thanks so much for sharing these substitutions, Bethany!
