We had a LOT of rain in Ohio this spring. And as a stay-at-home mom, I’ve tried a lot of creative ways to pass time on our rainy days. In case you’re stuck inside this summer, I’d highly recommend making your own finger paint.
It’s easy, cheap, you know what it’s made of, your children will have a lot of fun making it with you, and they’ll love painting for a long time.
When I made it with my children, Big Brother loved helping me stir the ingredients. Then he and Little Sister started painting … and painting and painting and painting. They used every bit of the paint and had a great time being creative. I really liked watching them have so much fun – even when Big Brother decided he should use the green finger paint to turn himself into the Grinch.
Once they were finished, colorful finger paint was all over their skin and clothes. I wrapped them in bath towels and carried them straight to the bathtub. Cleaning them up was easy.
The really messy part was cleaning our table. Covered in soap- and flour-based paint, I washed it over and over and over until the floury soap bubbles finally disappeared. Clean-up wasn’t ideal, but it would have been messy if I had bought finger paint. (Plus, the paint washed out of their clothing.)
I’m excited to try this recipe again, just because my kiddos had such a fantastic time. Ready to give it a try this summer?
Homemade finger paint
Mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, and 1 cup dish soap until there are no lumps and the paint is smooth. Divide into smaller containers and add food coloring to achieve the colors you’d like.
If you have leftover paint, store it in a sealed container in your refrigerator.
