At the beginning of 2013, I started a personal challenge I thought would be virtually impossible: a clothing fast. Could I survive going three months without shopping for clothing for myself? Or six months? How about a year? The challenge seemed impossible, especially when the thrill of bargain shopping was one of my favorite things.
While it took going cold turkey, I’m happy to say I have survived—and thrived. Since I decided to commit to just three months of the fast at a time, I was able to monitor my progress. This summer I was able to relax my rules and know I could handle shopping for clothes again.
Here’s the thing: I don’t have a shopping addiction any more. To simplify my wardrobe, I keep purging more and more clothes. And on a recent trip to a thrift store, I could actually make reasonable purchases. I looked for what I knew I needed, found some amazing deals, only bought what I needed … and my temptation to buy anything else was gone.
I’m thrilled with my change of perspective and pattern of spending. And I’m also thrilled that today I get to share exactly what I’ve learned over at Keeper of the Home.
Today, I’m linking up with Time Warp Wife and Women Living Well.
