Good news for new parents! Healthy Child Healthy World recently released a free 40-page PDF magazine, “Easy Steps for a Healthy and Safe Nursery.”
Boy, do I wish I would have had this booklet when I was pregnant.
Simple explanations about children’s health – and why pollutants are especially harmful to them – and the rise of childhood diseases are included. The publication also addresses problems and solutions to baby care, baby gear, and nursery furnishings and décor.
My favorite sections included recipes for make-your-own baby lotions and potions, and understandable explanations of what toxins every parent should avoid:
- 1,4-dioxane;
- DMDM hydantoin;
- 2-Bromo-2-nitropane -1,3-diol (bronopol);
- Ceteareth;
- Formaldehyde;
- Parabens;
- Polyethylene glycol (PEGs);
- Quaternium-15;
- Sodium borate;
- Talc;
- Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA);
- Diazolidinyl urea;
- DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine); imidazolidinyl urea;
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).
Are you curious about my personal Top 5 Healthy Nursery tips?
1. Wrap your baby’s crib mattress to prevent SIDS caused by flame retardants.
2. Use a scant drop of essential clove oil mixed with a tablspoon of olive oil to soothe a baby’s teething pains. It’s easy, effective, and safer than applying medicines made with parabens and artificial colors.
3. Paint nursery walls with zero- or low-VOC paint, available at most paint stores.
4. Keep soft plastic/PVC toys away from your baby. These toys are most often given to infants and are used as tub toys. Unfortunately, phthalates are used to soften the plastic.
5. As long as it’s warm enough outside, open the window in your baby’s nursery. The fresh air will circulate throughout the room and help reduce the indoor air pollution.

Clove oil sounds like something we could’ve used with my second one! He teethed really badly. Thanks for sharing at Healthy 2Day Wednesday!
