If your family is anything like mine, your children don’t really need a whole bunch of new toys for Christmas. In fact, they probably already have more than enough toys.
Children love to receive gifts on Christmas, though. (And birthdays, and any other holidays you choose to give gifts.) The good news is you can choose to give gifts that don’t clutter their toy boxes.
Here are some creative gift ideas for children of many ages:
- Help children express their creativity with art projects. Bring out their budding artiste by buying a wide variety of art supplies – crayons, markers, colored pencils, paper, glue, scissors, glitter, and lots of paper.
- Costumes are loved by children of all ages. If you’re not interested in buying complete costumes, buy different hats, gloves, or give art supplies (as simple as paper bags, paper plates, markers and paint) for masks.
- If you’d prefer to control clutter, consider giving experience gifts that will last throughout the year. Give lessons – depending on the child’s interests, you can choose from karate to ballet, piano, gymnastics, art, or swimming. Or, give the gift of a membership. Zoos are great for children of all ages – science centers and museums are, too. Trips also can be a fun, clutter-free gift. Plan a mid-winter trip to an indoor waterpark.
- For local, fairly inexpensive fun, plan a special afternoon out. Treat your child to a matinee at the movie theater and let him or her pick where to eat afterwards.
What clutter-free gifts have your children enjoyed?

Our families keep asking us what our daughters need for Christmas (they are 4 and 2, so not old enough yet to make their own lists) and I don’t know what to say. They have tons of toys! These are great ideas. I started asking for lessons (swimming or skating) for our girls. If I wasn’t pregnant this winter, I think I would have planned a ski trip and asked our families to help buy the girls’ lift tickets or ski rentals for the weekend, or something like that… a fun experience, as you say, with lots of memories, instead of a toy that gets old a week after Christmas. :) (I’m dropping by from Fellowship Fridays.)
