Just in time for Memorial Day weekend – here’s an outstanding recipe for BBQ sauce! Prince Charming and I have been whipping this up for our summer barbecues for years. It’s easy and tastes better than anything you can buy in a bottle.
(Disclaimer: I hesitate to share this recipe with you because of the tomato sauce. I haven’t found a tomato sauce that doesn’t come in a can – and tomato sauce’s acidity really releases a lot of the BPA that lines cans. If you don’t mind exposing yourself to some BPA, this recipe really is a tasty one.)
Ingredients
2 cups ketchup
2 cups tomato sauce
1½ cups brown sugar
1 cup red wine vinegar
½ cup molasses
2 Tablespoons butter
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Dash of ground red pepper
Directions
Over medium heat, mix 2 cups ketchup, 2 cups tomato sauce, 1 ½ cup brown sugar, 1 cup red wine vinegar, ½ cup molasses, and 2 Tablespoons butter.
Add ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon chili powder, ½ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and a dash of ground red pepper.
Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 30 minutes. (If you like a thick sauce, simmer up to 45 minutes.)
