As I write this, I realize it sounds completely ridiculous … but my family is committed to toilet paper use.
After contemplating a switch to “family cloth,” my husband adamantly refused the practice. We may be green in the Bernstein home, but we’re not THAT green. I did repurpose one of our older flannel baby receiving blankets into family cloth – and I even tried it. But I agreed with my husband. Family cloth is one green step my family just won’t be making.
So when I say that we’re committed to toilet paper, we are. I don’t want to waste TP, though. I’ve made the switch to a single-play paper (gone are the days of the cushy multi-ply varieties). But I still have wondered if my young children are using a little too much toilet paper.
I was intrigued to learn about Control-n-Roll – a green product that helps reduce the use of toilet paper and paper towels.
Control-n-Roll is an inconspicuous foam sleeve that fits over a toilet paper dispenser bar. The foam very handily acts like a brake – it stops a toilet paper roll from turning when you stop pulling. Typically one or two sheets of paper is saved during each use of toilet paper – and those couple of squares of TP adds up. Saving toilet paper a square at a time helps save money, and it cuts down on waste.
When using Control-n-Roll in my own bathroom, I never even noticed it was on the roll until the last quarter of a toilet paper roll was left. Then, I noticed the roll of toilet paper had a little more resistance when pulled. I actually liked feeling the resistance, to remind myself that I should be careful not to waste toilet paper – even squares of toilet paper.
