Have you ever tried to make your own laundry detergent? I did – for a couple years. As a new stay-at-home mom, I wanted to save money so I grated my own soap, melted and mixed the thee-ingredient soap.
The soap cleaned well enough, but the process wasn’t exactly convenient – especially with two little babies. And after making healthier and greener choices, I finally checked into the safety ratings of the Fels-Naptha, Borax, and washing soda.
Yikes. Fels-Naptha received a C and Borax received an F. Even though plenty of naturally-minded homemakers prefer Borax, I decided it wasn’t for me. So I made the switch to natural laundry detergents. (And I’ve loved them!)
A safer choice
I was so excited to hear about Meliora K and their Laundry Powder. Meliora K was started in 2013 in Chicago by Kate Jakubas because she wanted families to have clean, comfortable homes without being exposed to toxic chemicals that damage the environment.
Kate began making her own safe detergent and selling it – while fully disclosing all of the ingredients.
What is Meliora K’s Right Hand Laundry Powder made of? Three ingredients:
- Washing soda (sodium carbonate)
- Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- Vegetable soap (fragrance-free, dye-free, cold-processed, small batch made of coconut oil)
I love that it’s safe laundry detergent. I love that it cleans really, really well! And I love that I can use homemade laundry detergent without actually making it.
Soaps and detergents
Aside from the Right Hand Laundry Powder, Meliora K also sells the vegetable-based No Frills Soap Bar and Really Grate Soap Flakes, for homemakers who prefer to make their own detergent – or want to use a safe, all-purpose soap for cleaning.
