Are you preparing for the arrival of a baby and wondering how in the world you could simply make your baby’s world a little safer?
I started making greener decisions when my firstborn entered the world – so for me, having a baby and making healthier choices go hand in hand. Since I hadn’t formed any unhealthy baby care routines, the healthy ones seemed completely normal and doable for me.
For as much as I felt my entire mindset changed when I became a mom, caring for babies wasn’t so very difficult. Exhilarating and exhausting? Yes. But a wee newborn basically eats, sleeps, dirties diapers … and repeats.
So what green baby care recommendations do I have? Two major issues instantly come to mind: feeding and diapers.
Feeding
I wholeheartedly believe in breastfeeding — so much so, I wrote an entire book, First Bites, about it. Since I have enough reasons to fill a book, you can be sure that I firmly believe moms should at least attempt breastfeeding.
Really, there’s nothing safer or simpler than breastfeeding when it comes to nourishing your baby. (And yes … I did experience breastfeeding difficulties, so I know it’s not THAT simple. But once you get the hang of it, there’s nothing easier.)
Diapers
When it comes to diapering, reusable cloth diapers are a safe and simple choice – they’re green, too!
When I was pregnant, most store clerks I queried about cloth diapers thought that prefolds and pins were the only option – or, as my husband called them, origami diapers. I was nervous enough about becoming a mother to a tiny, squirmy infant, and the thought of pinning diapers onto my baby’s bottom was intimidating.
I knew we couldn’t afford to waste our money on disposable diapers – even if they were much easier to fasten. So I did a lot of homework and found that certain types of cloth diapers are just as easy to fasten as disposable. I chose those and ordered them online.
And, after three and a half years of diapering two children, I absolutely loved our one-size-fits-all pocket diapers. (Talk about saving money! I think we paid a total of $500. They were well worth the investment.) I had no regrets – except that I wish Erin Odom’s eBook, Confessions of a Cloth Diaper Convert, had been written when I was making my cloth diapering decisions. It is SO informative; SO helpful.
