If you’re like me and you’re fairly new to serious recycling, it might be a little confusing to remember what materials you can recycle and what ones you can’t. Here’s a list to help with your recycling efforts:
Paper
- Beverage, food, and detergent cartons
- Books
- Cardboard boxes (if it’s a cardboard food box, remove the liners or wax paper)
- Copy paper
- Corrugated cardboard
- Greeting cards
- Junk mail
- Magazines
- Newspaper
- Pizza boxes (remove the greasy paper liner)
- Paper plates (only if they’re clean)
- Shredded paper
- Telephone books
- Tissue boxes
- Uncoated paper shopping bags
- Wrapping paper
Plastic
#1 and #2 plastic is acceptable. (Sometimes #5 and #6 is acceptable, too.) Rinse first.

- Household cleaner containers
- Milk jugs
- Personal care product containers (including mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, etc.)
- Soft drink containers
- Water bottles
Glass
Clear, green, and brown glass is acceptable. Rinse first.
- Alcoholic beverage bottles
- Canning jars
- Food jars (including condiments, cooking oil, jelly, sauce, vegetable, etc.)
Metal
Cans should be rinsed first.
- Aluminum cans (including beer and pop cans, as well as food cans)
- Lids from glass jars

Yard waste
Local yard waste recycling centers may accept grass, leaves, branches, shrubs, and stumps.
Other items
Check local recycling centers and stores to find the availability of recycling for batteries, printer cartridges, plastic shopping bags, used motor oil, antifreeze, and car batteries.
